MT. ORAB - Thorough police work and a little luck helped a Mt. Orab officer nab an illegal immigrant suspected of causing the death of a Wisconsin juvenile in a hit-and-run crash.

Lt. Josh Black was following up on a harassment complaint the afternoon of Wednesday, Aug. 29, and eventually detained Eddie Carbajal-Lile, who was wanted by the Sheboygan County Sheriff's Department on the felony hit-and-run charge.

Carbajal-Lile and another undocumented Mexican native were quickly transferred to Boone County, Ky., for holding before Carbajal-Lile is transported to Sheboygan, Wisc., to face the charge. The other illegal immigrant is expected to be deported.

According to Lt. Black, the Mt. Orab Police Department received a complaint from a female Mt. Orab resident concerning harassing phone calls. While en route to respond to the complaint, Lt. Black said he noticed a vehicle carrying two Latino men who fit the description of the complaint and a traffic stop was initiated.

"Neither one had any I.D.," said Lt. Black, who determined the suspects were likely in the country illegally.

Black was primarily interested in the passenger, who was believed to have made the threatening calls. The officer was unable to communicate with Carbajal-Lile, the driver.

"If he could speak English, he wasn't," said Lt. Black.

The passenger who did communicate with Lt. Black gave false names for himself and Carbajal-Lile. The passenger told police Carbajal-Lile's name was Ricardo Ibanez-Crisanto.

Black contacted the Brown County Communications Center, who then contacted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Both men were arrested on a charge of menacing. The men were transported to the Brown County Sheriff's Office and were later turned over to ICE and then taken to Kentucky for processing. Fingerprinting after Carbajal-Lile's arrest revealed his true identity, and Sheboygan County officials were contacted.

Sheboygan County media reports indicate police have evidence that Carbajal-Lile was involved in a crash in Lima, Wisc., Aug. 14, in which Paul Watry, 17, was killed and two individuals, both 18, were injured. Investigators worried that Carbajal-Lile might have fled to Mexico following the deadly crash, although the possibility that he was hiding out in a neighboring state was considered. Lt. Black said the passenger arrested with Carbajal-Lile was believed to have been living in Indianapolis, Ind.

Lt. Black said he has been contacted by a Sheboygan County detective who expressed gratitude on behalf of Wisconsin law enforcement and the family of the victim of the hit-and-run tragedy.
