SAN DIEGO -- Border Patrol agents pulled four men from a burning SUV that crashed down an embankment in the South Bay, federal officials said Wednesday.

The driver, a suspected immigrant smuggler, apparently lost control of the Dodge Durango on Wueste Road in Chula Vista around 9 p.m. Tuesday, then allegedly abandoned the vehicle and his passengers when the vehicle burst into flames, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials.

The driver, who was not injured, was later caught and arrested on suspicion of alien smuggling, CBP officials said.

Agents patrolling the area pulled the passengers from the burning wreckage. The four occupants were taken to hospitals, where they were being treated for mild to moderate injuries, officials said.

All five occupants were determined to be Mexican nationals illegally in the United States, according to the CBP. Their names were withheld.
