LULAC Against Employer Raids
May 21, 2008 (202) 833-6130 ext. 16
lulac calls for a halt to large scale employment based immigration raids
Washington, DC LULAC National President Rosa Rosales made the following statement today in response to the Workforce Protections Subcommittee of the House Education and Labor Committee:
“LULAC thanks the Congressional Hispanic Caucus for highlighting the impact of raids on families and children such as in the largest workplace raid in U.S. history in Postville, Iowa and addressing this important issue. It is about time that Congress begins to look at the extremely aggressive tactics of Immigration and Custom Enforcement Officials (ICE) and the effects on the immigrant community. Up to this time congressional hearings that have been held focus on problems of immigration and rarely on human costs. [b]We urge Congress to hold hearings so that lawmakers are better informed about the human costs of aggressive enforcement measures so that they can develop more proactive immigration laws that meet the needs of our economy while expecting human dignity and the right to work.â€

Appeal to Mexican President Calderon:
"Amnesty International has documented torture, arbitrary detention,
excessive use of force and the denial of due process," said Cox in a letter
to President Calderon ahead of his official visit Sunday through next
Thursday (Feb. 10-14). "The public security and criminal justice
institutions have too frequently been characterized as abusive, ineffective
and lacking independence and transparency."
Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA"Distrust and caution are the parents of security."
