Mesa on edge as it awaits promised Arpaio sweeps

Mesa on edge as it awaits promised Arpaio sweeps
    Nick R. Martin, Tribune

With Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s promise to bring his immigration and crime sweeps to Mesa, people are planning for anything to happen.

Mesa officials quiet on pending Arpaio sweeps

Scottsdale chief against his force doing sweeps

Hispanics in Chandler fear another Roundup

Mesa immigration protest prompts police memo

Rabbis critical of sheriffs sweeps for illegals

Cooperation or clash between Arpaio, Gascón?

Schools are figuring out what to do if families are broken up. Hispanics, no matter their citizenship or immigration status, are avoiding public places. And the police, planning for possible chaos, have squads of officers on standby, ready to quell civil unrest should it break out.

Mesa, it seems, has become a city on edge, its people wondering what will happen next.

I'm still amazed that these activists don't help the illegals get their affairs in order and go home! Didn't they think that a MAJORITY of Americans want illegals deported and that's precisely WHY there are raids? Just because we prefer not to engage in the mob mentality of protesting doesn't mean we're not serious about enforcing the laws!

It does boggle the mind Miguelina. I guess we just should ignore the law in their case.

I'd opine they wouldn't be on edge unless they're guilty of something beyond being illegal aliens. In my new-construction neighborhood, due to frequent thefts, the cops occasionally send a couple of cars to a site just for show. Heck, the illegal aliens don't flee. But if a truckload of windows or copper pipe (currently the favored loot) begins a fast exit, I'd guess the police would find a reason to stop them. Around here, only the criminals are edgy. It also seems to me, as vocal as illegal aliens are in that area, they too don't fear law enforcement generally. Seems this is a buncha' hype, perhaps fostered to protect burglars, robbers, drug dealers, et al.

You took the words right out of my mouth Tom2! Yes, people of Mesa, you SHOULD be edgy if you've done something wrong. Stand up and be recognized! Don't make us waste more of our tax dollars hunting for you!
