The woman who was plucked from obscurity and abject poverty as a child to become one of the best known faces of Afghanistan is seen here without her hair covered.

Now she and her husband are seeking asylum in France after threats that began in her own village and a bomb was thrown into their couple’s Kabul home.

While attending a film festival in France the couple was told by their family to stay away from home.

They are now said to be hiding, with Marina remaining veiled and being locked in a room by her husband for her own safety whenever he has to go out.

The "offending" image was taken at a South Korean film festival. Marina rose to stardom by appearing in the Golden Globe winning film Osama (2001).
