GRESHAM, Ore. – A mother-daughter duo has been arrested after police recovered more than $6,500 in stolen goods.

The investigation began when someone stole 42-year-old Sara Mis Canul’s purse. That suspect told police that Canul sells stolen items from local stores.

The Neighborhood Crimes Response Team launched an undercover investigation into Canul and her daughter, 20-year-old Nidia Laticia Interian. The officers were able to obtain items to sell to the suspect with the cooperation of Target, Safeway and Fred Meyer.

The ploy worked and police obtained a search warrant for the pair’s apartment where they found $6,500 in stolen goods. Interian was arrested at the home. Canul was arrested in front of a nearby flea market where she is suspected of selling stolen goods. Both were charged with theft by receiving.

Mother, Daughter Arrested for Fencing Operation

A case that began over a year ago with a stolen purse ended last night when Gresham Police Detectives arrested a mother and daughter and recovered over $6,500.00 in stolen merchandise.

Police arrested SARA MIS CANUL, 42, and her daughter, NIDIA LATICIA INTERIAN, 20, both of Gresham and charged them with Theft I by receiving.

On May 28, 2007, Officer Jerom Sweazey arrested a person for stealing CANUL’S purse. At that time, the person told Swezaey that CANUL buys and sells stolen items from local stores. Sweazey followed up on that information and interviewed CANUL and recovered some stolen merchandise. The case was eventually referred to the Neighborhood Crimes Response Team out of the Gresham Police investigations section.

The NCRT began an investigation that included an undercover officer selling items to CANUL and INTERIAN. The officers were able to obtain items to sell to the suspect with the cooperation of Target, Safeway and Fred Meyer, which all provided merchandise.

CANUL and INTERIAN were arrested on 04-18-08 and a search warrant for their apartment was served. Over $6,500.00 in merchandise was recovered. CANUL was arrested in front of a nearby flea market, where detectives suspect she was selling many of the stolen items. CANUL was also suspected of selling items out of her apartment and delivering stolen items to other nearby apartments.
