    VA: Page County Immigration

    Page County Immigration

As local governments are taking on the illegal immigration issue, one county leader in the Valley has plans to fix the problem.

Page County Supervisor Charles Hoke is looking into what other counties in Virginia have done to curb illegal immigration. But this supervisor says local governments can't take this issue on by themselves.

Hoke says there is a legal way for immigrants to come into the country. They just need to follow the immigration laws. However Hoke says, many aren't following those laws.

"Why should someone else come to this country, and disregard our laws and be treated better than the people that are here as far as the immigration system," says Hoke. "We do have a good immigration system, we just need to have it applied to everyone fairly."

Looking at the resolutions Prince William and Loudon County enacted, Hoke wants to see a similar resolution that covers three issues giving illegals incentives to become legal in the United States.

Hoke's first proposal is if a newborn's parents are illegal immigrants, than the child should be denied a birth certificate. The second proposal penalizes employers with heavy fines for hiring illegals. And the third denies illegals the services that are funded by taxpayers.

Hoke admits this can't be done alone, and he says localities need to bond together to get something done.

"This country was founded and is still working for the people, by the people, and if the silent majority would just get up off the couch and write a letter to their senators and congressmen, we would be able to address this. And if they don't, then nothing will happen," says Hoke.

Hoke says since January of 2007, localities in about 40 states have enacted resolutions for this very problem. The county attorney is looking at other resolutions, specifically those of Prince William County and Loudon County, to see if Page County could create a similar policy.
