New York immigration activists are calling on Governor Spitzer to make good on his campaign promise not to comply with a federal bill that requires people to be citizens in order to get a driver's license.

The Labor Council for Latin American Advancement, or LCLAA, said that denying driver's licenses to immigrants is the wrong way to enforce immigration laws.

Albany District LCLAA President Guillermo Perez said, "Do the right thing, do the smart thing, do what will make New Yorkers safer. Get the DMV out of the business of trying to enforce our screwed up immigration laws. Let's have one driver's license for all New Yorkers."

The federal government has passed the Real ID Act, which prevents many non-citizens from getting their driver's licenses.

LCLAA officials said the measure would only lead to widespread discrimination.
