Fox asks federal agency to investigate first lady's sons

MEXICO CITY Mexican President Vicente Fox has decided to ask a federal agency to investigate possible corruption by the first lady's sons.

The decision came just hours after a Fox spokesman insisted the president wasn't obligated by law to do so.

In a news release issued last night, the president's office said it had turned over a congressional commission's report on the corruption allegations to the Public Administration Department.

The president's office said even though it wasn't obligated to do so, it was sending the report to Public Administration for analysis and a decision on what action is warranted.

The congressional committee concluded this week that there were indications the sons of first lady Marta Sahagun may have improperly used government contacts to enrich themselves.

Sahagun's two sons have denied the allegations. The first lady and Fox, who were married in 2001, also denied any wrongdoing. The sons are from Sahagun's first marriage.
