The government says net migration from Mexico had dropped by more than 50 percent by mid-2008 compared to the level seen in 2007.
The president of Mexico's National Statistics, Geography and Information Institute says the dramatic drop is due to a huge decline in the number of Mexicans leaving to find work, rather than any large surge in the number returning home.
He said Thursday that there was a net outflow of 455,000 Mexicans between August 2006 and August 2007, a figure that dropped to 204,000 people between August 2007 and the same month of 2008.
While the number of returning Mexicans stayed largely the same, the number leaving fell from 933,000 to 654,000 in the comparison period.
