Refugees flock to Valletta for chance of move to US
Refugees made it clear yesterday they would gladly leave the island for good as they thronged outside the UN Refugee Agency's office in Valletta hoping to qualify for the resettlement scheme to the US.
The police had to be called in to disperse the crowd of about 200, who tried to get into the UNHCR's office in Strait Street, Valletta.
About 200 refugees are to be resettled in the US in a move that is expected to go some way towards easing Malta's illegal immigration woes. Though the initiative is a one-off, the US government is contemplating taking in 200 immigrants from Malta every year thanks to a proposal steered by the UNHCR.
The initiative will involve refugees or those in need of humanitarian protection, excluding economic migrants, and will target primarily vulnerable groups, like children and single women.
In fact, women and children were allowed first into the building yesterday, as scores of frustrated others were left outside. Some individuals had been waiting for at least two hours before the doors opened.
Neil Falzon, head of the UNHCR office in Malta said last night: "We are actively supporting the US offer but we will not be receiving more applications because we need to examine the large amount received so far".
The US Embassy in Malta was instrumental in helping with the resettlement, which is the biggest single relocation of African migrants from the island.
Malta has raised the issue of illegal migration at various EU fora in a coordinated attempt to persuade other member states to share the problems spawned by the immigrant tide. http://www.timesofmalta.com/core/article.php?id=267992

Who's going to take millions of our illegals to help ease our illegal immigration problem?
What do they mean we're contemplating taking 200 illegals each year? How many is France, Germany, Spain, Mexico, Canada, New Zealand, etc. taking? Oh, that's right, they want to come to a place (the U.S.) were the citizens will provide social welfare.
