Poll: Arpaio crushes Goddard in gov’s race

A new Rasmussen Reports survey finds that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio would crush Attorney General Terry Goddard in a head-to-head race for governor. That’s good news for Republicans.

The even BETTER news for Democrats is that Arpaio is not running for governor.

And will not run. (Though he’ll continue to hint that he might)

The Rasmussen survey of Arizona voters found that Arpaio beats Goddard by 12 percentage points, 51 percent to 39 percent.

On the other hand, Goddard beats current Gov. Jan Brewer by 9 points (44 percent to 35 percent) and is in a statistical dead heat with State Treasure Dean Martin, 40 percent to 38 percent.

Given what looks like a sure thing why wouldn’t Arpaio run?

For one thing, he doesn’t play well with others, and a governor gets nothing done without the cooperation of the 90-member state legislature. Another – more important – reason is that if Arpaio were to run for governor his national exposure would drop to nil.

After all, there are 50 governors.

But there is only one (self-proclaimed) toughest sheriff in America.
