CHAPEL HILL -- Former Congressman Tom Tancredo will come to UNC-Chapel Hill on Tuesday to speak about illegal immigration.

Tancredo, an unsuccessful Republican candidate for president in 2008, is well known for his hard-line views on immigration.

He said during his presidential campaign that he supports strictly enforcing current immigration laws and deporting all illegal immigrants. He also said he supports building a fence along the Mexican border and has said lax border security creates a terrorist threat and endangers American jobs.

The student group Youth for Western Civilization invited Tancredo to speak at UNC-CH. Riley Matheson, speaking for the group, said Tancredo will speak about "illegal immigration and the disastrous effects it has on American society."

Matheson said he hopes Tancredo will also address whether public colleges should admit illegal immigrants, something the student group opposes.

Tancredo will speak at 6:30 p.m. in Bingham Hall, Room 103.
