Sheriff Joe Arpaio PHOENIX, AZ -- Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio says he will not cancel a speaking engagement scheduled for Thursday, in spite of threats of a protest against his immigration policies.
According to a Tuesday news release, Arpaio was invited to speak at Mesa Community College by a student Republican group.
Authorities are reportedly concerned the expected protest may get out of hand, saying the reserved room holds 308 people with an overflow area for an additional 99.
"That many people packed into a tight area poses obvious security questions," said Deputy Chief David Trombi. Trombi will reportedly provide security for the Sheriff.
Trombi said that according to information he has received from Mesa authorities, the protest may be a repeat of a December 2009 speech at the ASU Cronkite School in downtown Phoenix.
In that incident, protestors interrupted a question and answer session with Arpaio by singing and chanting and the Sheriff walked out.
Thursday's speech is schedule for 6:30 p.m.

Think about it 'threat of protest.' A 'threat?'
Seems if speakers invited to colleges are for enforcing our immigration laws they are hounded by protesters and from some videos posted here it isn't pretty to watch. But if a speaker comes, such as Vicente Fox, who speaks at numerous colleges, advocates that illegals (he won't use that word) should get amnesty, things are peaceful and politically correct.

Arpaio Greeted by Quieter Scene at MCC

MESA - Sheriff Joe Arpaio was greeted with a much different scene at Mesa Community College Thursday night, after being heckled at the ASU downtown campus back in November.
Arpaio was concerned that protesters would disrupt his speech, but it went smoothly.
The sheriff defended himself and his deputies in their enforcement of illegal immigration.
"It's somewhat controversial -- our operations. We've been accused of racial profiling. My deputies do not racial profile. And I've been accused of many other things, but that's the nature of doing business," he said.
More than 300 people gathered to hear him speak.

Arpaio speaks at Mesa college, says he won’t back down

MESA, AZ -- The man who may run for governor still values his role as the "toughest sheriff in America."
"This Sheriff will continue to enforce the illegal immigration laws," Sheriff Joe Arpaio told a packed room of Mesa Community College students Thursday evening.
During his speech, he railed against the media and answered questions ranging from immigration to drugs.
Arpaio said he is not backing down on his roundups of illegal immigrants, despite the federal government's investigation of him in what some say is racial profiling.
He also took some jabs at Janet Napolitano.
"She didn't call me," said Arpaio. "If the Attorney General was here, I was hoping they would call me, so I could give them a little advice. Of course, why would they call me when they're investigating me, but that's another issue."
The Sheriff was addressing the Mesa Community College Republicans, who laughed at his jokes and jotted down questions for him to answer.
The group's president, Kevin Fosburgh, said the college took steps to prevent rowdy and disruptive protests like the one at Arizona State University last year, where protesters shouted Arpaio off stage.
"I have seen it since, and it's immaturity, is what it is," said Fosburgh. "Those kids were acting like high school students and not like college students."
Outside, a group of students set up a table and said they walked out in protest of Arpaio's immigration policies and crime suppression sweeps, after organizers said they could not set up inside the room where Arpaio was speaking.
"Everybody is just here to do better in life, to have a better future, to make sure your family is better and wealthy and healthy," said one member of the group, Moises Morales.
