Before Alex Granados questions the motivations of Board of County Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart, let me graciously help Alex off of his pedestal. Only God can know the motivations of the human heart. What we can know is that by working to obtain a Virginia law patterned after the county's rule of law regarding illegal immigration, and, likewise, patterned after Arizona's law, Chairman Stewart is preserving Supervisor Stirrup's illegal immigration initiative from any future reversal by a county board.

Magnanimous John Stirrup would not be petty about Chairman Stewart's efforts on the state level, which complement his own. Alex's obtuse opinion in his June 27 article entitled "A great leader smothered by ambition" feeds pro-illegal immigration interest groups and the Obama Administration, which apparently do not trust the professionalism and legitimacy of state and local law enforcement agencies.

This year alone in the U.S., state and local law enforcement sharing information with Immigration and Customs Enforcement has taken 11,000 criminal aliens off the streets and out of the U.S. We need to do more to support state and local law enforcement to seek and identify criminal aliens, detain and deport them. A Virginia law would facilitate the inter-operation of local law enforcement with the state and federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement, helping to make immigration processing and removal more efficient. Serious criminal aliens should not be free.

In addition to keeping communities safer, Corey Stewart understands the need to save a locality's valuable resources. Contrary to Alex Granados' suspicions that the chairman's motivations may be self-centered, Chairman Stewart just might be positively motivated to maintain public safety for all residents of Prince William County, while reducing the strain on local law enforcement. By his foresight and actions, Chairman Corey Stewart is, indeed, one of the finest leaders the county has ever had.
