Mexican Consulate grows

It's been a decade since the Mexican government recognized so much growth in the Midlands' immigrant population that it opened an Omaha office.

Regional demand, especially for legal assistance, has continued to rise, said Jorge Espejel, who in 2008 became the second person to oversee the Nebraska-Iowa territory.

Employees over the past decade increased from five to 12. And programming expanded, including one initiative that soon will bring Mexican Spanish-language teachers to Nebraska schools, and another that offers clients free health screenings.
