Omaha (KPTM) - The heated immigration debate in Fremont could soon be part of the campaign trail.
A man says he's running against Fremont mayor Skip Edwards because of Edwards vote against an immigration law last week.
Wesley Homes, 72, said he decided to run because Fremont's current mayor turned his back on the city, when he cast the deciding vote last week.
Homes is a veteran and was also a police officer for 15 years, but he has never held public office.
"I think (the mayor and city council) should have taken more time to consider everything that was presented to them before they voted," said Homes.
Homes said he wants to replace Edwards after Edwards voted against an illegal immigration ordinance.
Homes filed the paperwork to become a write-in candidate for the upcoming election.
"Somebody needs to stand up and say we need something done," said Homes.
If elected, Homes said he would form a task force, consisting of local, state, and federal officials to tackle the illegal immigration issue.
"It's costing all of us, everyone of us taxpayers, money. We need to get the matter resolved," said Homes.
Fremont's mayoral election will be part of the general election on November 4th.
