A man wanted for the murder of a Brazilian police officer nearly 20 years ago has been arrested in Deerfield Beach, the FBI said.
Joao Maximiano de Oliveira, 49, was taken into custody late Thursday night after about a month of surveillance, according to Special Agent David Billitier of the FBI Fugitive Task Force.
According to Billitier, Oliveira is accused of shooting a police officer numerous times with a .22-caliber firearm during an ambush in Sao Paolo.
Billitier said that after his arrest, Oliveira told authorities that he illegally came to the United States in 1991 and moved to Florida about 15 years ago.
While in Florida, Oliveira worked as a handyman and would fix and sell cars, Billitier said. He kept a low profile, changing cars every few days and driving with temporary tags.
Oliveira also rented out homes in Broward County to other Brazilians.
He had no arrests while in the country and fathered two children with the same woman, Billitier said.
''He was very comfortable here,'' Billitier said.
Authorities in South Florida began searching for Oliveira after Brazilian police contacted the FBI in Brazil and said they learned he may be living in Florida.
Billitier said that after several months, agents located several homes that Oliveira was renting out and conducted surveillance.
They found him at a Deerfield Beach home, where he was arrested without incident with the help of Fort Lauderdale police, the Broward Sheriff's Office and U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement.
Oliveira was picked up for being in the country illegally, Billitier said. He is currently being detained at the Krome Detention Center.
Officials with ICE in Fort Lauderdale and Brazil are working with authorities in the country for Oliveira's return, ICE spokeswoman Nicole Navas said.Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote!

That's okay. I was wrong I posted it from Channel 4 Miami. The Sun Sentinel also had it and the comments show how fed up people are with the illegals.
