CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — The owners of a Chinese restaurant in Middle Tennessee are accused of illegal alien harboring and tax fraud charges.

Quanwei Shi and Chongqiang Chen, both 29, are charged with conspiracy to harbor illegal aliens, harboring illegal aliens, money laundering, income tax fraud and employment tax fraud.

Shi and Chen co-owned the New China Buffet and Grill in Clarksville, according to U.S. Attorney Don Cochran for the Middle District of Tennessee.

Officials said the owners harbored and tried to hide undocumented workers from China and Guatemala. The illegal aliens were paid in cash, didn't fill out any immigration forms and lived with the owners at their home.

Officials said these employees stayed in the kitchen where they did not interact with customers.

Shi is furthermore accused of failing to take taxes out of the undocumented workers payments in a sum of $175,455. He's also accused of filing false tax forms with the IRS.

If convicted, the owners faces up to 20 years in prison and a federal fine of $500,000.

Shi was arrested at his Clarksville home on March 17 and Chen surrendered to authorities in New York on Thursday.
