Pair protest McCain, DeWine immigration stance

MARY ANN GREIER/Salem News staff writer
HANOVERTON - Not everyone on Plymouth Street sang the praises of visiting Senators Mike DeWine and John McCain at a rally Monday afternoon.

Lisbon resident Wayne Herrod and fellow America First Party member Jerry Martin of Parma Heights hoisted a sign in reference to recent legislation which would allow some illegal aliens to become legal.

"We don't believe that's in the best interest of the United States," Herrod said.

When asked why someone from Lisbon would care about the immigration issue, he referred to a display from a money wiring service printed in Spanish and giving directions on how to wire money back to Mexico.

"I know they're in the area," he said.

He claimed that illegal aliens were taking jobs Ohioans would do, such as construction, roofing, landscaping or manufacturing positions which don't require the use of the English language.

He also mentioned the use of public health care and welfare.

Herrod said he wanted McCain to know that not all Americans share his view when it comes to the immigration issue.

He and Martin had flyers from America First Party and said their protest would be a quiet one.

No problems were reported with anyone at the rally, which was attended by Columbiana County Sheriff David Smith and one of his deputies, who kept an eye on the crowd.

There is a novel idea. Doing something in the best interest of America!
