TX: Irving, Studies Finds System Hurts Hispanic Voters

Of course, another pandering Dallas Morning News story. Just like Farmers Branch, the council seats are voted on by the populace of the entire city. Now the Hispanics in Irving, who NEVER have enough people going out to vote, are wanting to change the law where Irving is split up into voting sections (like Dallas, and THAT is a MESS!! Battles all the time over where each district's lines are.). This is so, in a heavily Hispanic populated part of Irving, they can elect the Hispanic person they want to serve on the council. Lots of talk in this article about the "whites always vote in a block" and "us against them" mentality.

If they could actually get more of their "people" out and voting, and if enough of those "people" were actually legal, then there would be NO problem in electing the person they want. Not to mention, they act like EVERY Hispanic in Irving votes ONLY for Hispanic candidates ("overwhelmingly vote"). As if just because you are Hispanic, you can't make a good choice based on how a candidate fits in with your own beliefs, rather than just checking the box when there is a Hispanic name. They are being racist and stereotyping the Hispanics of Irving by these statements!!!

But, no, they DEMAND to have the rules changed to suit THEM! I'm sick of this stuff! I'm sick of seeing these people crying racism at every turn, just because they don't get their way! I'm also sick at seeing that those slimeball lawyers who have been suing Farmers Branch to death are the lawyers involved in this case. No surprise here!!

This EXACT same case came before the court in Farmers Branch last year, when the Hispanic council member candidate lost miserably to Tim Scott. This sore loser decided to sue the city to split up tiny Farmers Branch into districts, so that the heavily Hispanic part of town could pick him, since he couldn't get enough of the legal Hispanics (or anyone else) to vote for him. The court threw out the case because Farmers Branch was too small a city to divide up into districts.

Irving is a much larger city, HOWEVER, I can only hope that this case gets thrown out as well!!

Studies find Irving's at-large City Council system hurts Hispanic voters

Irving’s at-large voting system effectively allows white voters to block the election of Hispanic voters’ favored City Council candidates, according to new studies that are part of a federal voting rights lawsuit filed against the city.

The studies, released this week, said that there is at least one area in Irving that could serve as a single-member council district where a majority of residents are voting-age Hispanics.

The reports also said that Irving’s Hispanic voters in recent council elections have overwhelmingly chosen Hispanic candidates. According to the studies, none of those candidates won because non-Hispanic voters, who typically cast more than 90 percent of ballots in the elections, overwhelmingly chose Hispanic candidates’ opponents.

“It is clear that whites vote as a bloc, and given they vote as a bloc, it effectively negates any chance a Hispanic has at being elected,â€

They run "La Raza" candidates and expect to win and then blame whites voting as a "bloc.".....this group is the biggest "bloc" vote in their pro-illegal stance. I never heard of "white" voting blocs. My small hometown is 98% white and has a black mayor.[/quote]

    Fed Up,

I'm surprised you didn't hear about this last year, since we both live in FB.

Or are you saying you STILL think the whole situation was funny?
