LAWTON – Oklahoma’s new anti-illegal immigration law has some farmers and agricultural businesses scrambling for laborers as Hispanic workers fearful of being deported stay away from work.

House Bill 1804, which went into effect on Thursday, gives local authorities more enforcement options against undocumented workers and increases penalties against employers who hire or harbor illegal immigrants.

Chris Ellison of the Motley Gin in Hollis said he is worried about the future of his operation after he had to cut his labor force by 50 percent and cease ginning during the night shift.

I just posted an article that contradicts that statement.

"There has been an overstatement of how desperate times are right now," said Howard Rosenberg, an agriculture labor expert at the University of California at Berkeley. "No crops are rotting on the vine, and the labor supply so far this year seems sufficient.

SINCE THE POPULATION OF ILLEGAL ALIENS WILL BE GONE, FARMS WILL NOT HAVE TO PRODUCE MORE TO FEED THE ILLEGAL POPULATION. THEY WILL PRODUCE LESS AND NEED LESS WORKERS AND MAKE LESS MONEY. :P :P :P
THERE IS A LOT OF WORKERS IN PRISONS THAT WOULD BE GLAD TO DO THE WORK.

MAYBE ONE CREW IS ALL ELLISON WILL NEED NOW.

One problem is a lot of these guys don't want to have to work themselves, they'd rather drive around in their Silverado's and fancy themselves as modern day plantation owners and watch their slaves toil in the fields. I see it in the construction trades on a daily basis.

Received this e-mail a couple weeks ago.

    CHEAP LABOR?

Isn't that what the whole immigration issue is about?

Business doesn't want to pay a decent wage

    Consumers don't want expensive produce

Government will tell you Americans don't want the jobs

But the bottom line is cheap labor
The phrase "cheap labor" is a myth, a farce, and a lie
~ there is no such thing as "cheap labor."

Take, for example, an illegal alien with a wife and five children.

He takes a job for $5.00 or $6.00/ hour.

At that wage, with six dependents, he pays no income tax,
yet at the end of the year, if he files an Income Tax Return,
he gets an "earned income credit" of up to $3,200 free.

He qualifies for Section 8 housing and subsidized rent

    He qualifies for food stamps

He qualifies for free (no deductible, no co-pay)
    health care

His children get free breakfasts and lunches at school

He requires bilingual teachers and books

He qualifies for relief from high energy bills

If they are or become, aged, blind or disabled,
    they qualify for SSI.

Once qualified for SSI they can qualify for Medicare.

All of this is at the taxpayer's expense.

He doesn't worry about car insurance, life insurance, or homeowners insurance.

Taxpayers provide Spanish language signs, bulletins and printed material.

He and his family receive the equivalent of $20.00 to $30.00 /hour in benefits.

Working Americans are lucky to have $5.00 or $6.00/ hour left after paying their bills and his.

The American taxpayers also pay for increased crime, graffiti and trash clean-up.

    Cheap labor?
    YEAH RIGHT!
    Wake up people!

Even the Democrats in OK have brains! It is good that they are catching this before it turns into Calif., where half the state legislature is latino Democrats and plain idiotic liberals. When the illegals vote you get California. hang in there OK we are behind you and I hope you don't lose in any court of law.

$380 a week is too much for food stamps for a family of three, and that is a $10.70 an hour job, full time, after taxes and all.
$380 a week is too much for energy assistance.
$380 is too much for WIC.

$380 a week won't even get a two bedroom apartment with a dishwasher and barely makes the utilities.

How do these people get all this?
    Really.
I don't care who you are, how you got here, what color you are, what language/dialect you speak... If you didn't get here legally then you don't belong here. Period.
