Poll: Nevada Needs New Immigration Law

Poll: Nevada Needs New Immigration Law
Hispanics Make Up 28 Percent Of Clark County Population

LAS VEGAS -- Arizona’s controversial new immigration law, which has led to boycotts, protests and presidential disapproval, should be instituted in Nevada.

That’s according to a FOX5 Web poll, which found a vast majority of respondents were in favor of a similar law, despite the fact that Nevada, unlike Arizona, is not a border state.

The poll was posted April 23 and closed Friday morning. It garnered the most response of any FOX5 Web poll in recent memory, with more than 8,000 total responses.

In the end, 69 percent favored the new, tougher immigration law, while 30 percent were opposed and 1 percent was undecided.

Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons said earlier this week that he wouldn’t push for a law similar to Arizona’s, feeling it was the federal government’s responsibility to enforce the United States border. He also slammed Democrats, saying their inaction on the issue forced Arizona lawmakers to take matters into their own hands.

New lawsuits challenging the law were being filed Friday morning and more Hispanic activists were calling for protests of Arizona businesses and products.

Nevada’s Hispanic community has largely come out against the law as well and the group Campaign to Reform Immigration for America is also planning to hold multiple May 1 rallies across the country.

Hispanics and Latinos make up 28 percent of Clark County’s population, according to the 2010 Las Vegas Perspective, an annual survey of southern Nevada’s demographics and business climate.

Hispanics also make up the largest number of students, 41 percent, enrolled with the Clark County School District.

The Web poll is closed, but FOX5 still wants to know what you think about Arizona’s immigration law. Send your comments to THE RANT and hear the responses weeknights on FOX5 News at 10.
