United States To Screen Backgrounds of 400,000 Port Workers
Workers also will have biometric-based identification cards
By Scott Miller
Washington File Staff Writer
Washington -- In an effort to enhance security in the United States and at U.S. ports, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will begin conducting background checks on nearly 400,000 port workers in the United States, according to Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff.
Chertoff announced April 25 that DHS will begin name-based background checks by matching the names of the workers against government terrorist watch lists.
"It is fundamental that individuals who pose a security threat do not gain access to our nation's ports," he said. "The name-based checks will provide an immediate security boost."
Homeland Security officials said that the background checks also will review workers' immigration status to ensure that the port workers are eligible to work legally in the United States.
"Just like with other critical sectors of our economy, we will not tolerate the employment of illegal workers at our nation's ports or maritime critical infrastructure," Chertoff said.
The first round of background checks will focus on employees and longshoremen who have daily access to the security areas of port facilities. The Transportation Security Administration, which will conduct the checks, anticipates the first round of checks will be completed by the end of July.
As the workers are vetted, DHS simultaneously is preparing to roll out a biometric-based identification card for transportation workers. The Transportation Worker Identification Credential, or TWIC, provides a reliable way to identify the workers who are being checked.
Background checks and TWIC cards ultimately will be required not just for port workers, but for other transportation workers -- such as truck drivers and rail employees -- who need access to secure facilities. DHS officials said they anticipate issuing approximately 750,000 TWIC cards.

That should have been done a long long time ago. Our government is smelly.

Gee only 4years after 9/11 and we get all this half-baked security. Not to mention all of the illegals that have come to this country prior to that including terrorist cells and are still pouring in. WOW
Freedom isn't free... Don't forget the men who died and gave that right to all of us....
