CBP Discovers Illegal Aliens Hidden in Vehicle Water Tank, S

Calexico, California - United States Customs and Border Protection officers working at the Calexico downtown port of entry discovered two illegal aliens hidden in unusual compartments in separate incidents and arrested both drivers, officials announced today.

On Wednesday, February 25, CBP officers arrested a 36-year-old San Diego man driving a commercial van from Mexico after they discovered an undocumented Mexican male hidden inside the vehicle’s empty water tank.

The van entered the port at about 7 p.m, and was referred to the secondary examination area for a more comprehensive examination after the primary officer became suspicious of the driver and the vehicle.

During the secondary examination, the utilization of a human/narcotic detector dog and x-ray equipment led officers to the discovery of the undocumented Mexican male hidden inside the water tank of the 1999 Ford.

Emergency personnel were immediately dispatched for assistance in safely opening the tank.

The man was subsequently removed from the water tank and is being held by CBP as a material witness in the prosecution case.

The driver was advised of his rights, charged with alien smuggling and transported to the Imperial County jail. The vehicle was seized by CBP.

The second case involved a 21-year-old Mexicali woman who was arrested on Thursday, February 26, at about 6:30 p.m., after officers found a 21-year-old Mexican male hidden in the 1999 Chrysler Cirrus she was driving.

Officers noticed her nervous demeanor when she approached the primary booth for inspection and referred the vehicle and driver into the secondary area for a more in-depth investigation.

During the secondary inspection, a human/narcotic detector dog alerted to the speaker box in the trunk of the vehicle. Officers subsequently discovered and safely removed the man from the speaker box.

The driver was advised of her rights, charged with alien smuggling and transported to the Imperial County jail to await arraignment. The vehicle was seized by CBP.

The undocumented Mexican man was held by CBP as material witness in the prosecution case.
