Teen crashes car into tree, flees scene

MARSTONS MILLS – A Brazilian teen living in the country illegally abandoned his Mercedes after crashing it into a tree on Race Lane this afternoon, police said.

Police found a 1994 Mercedes sedan with a smashed windshield and both air bags deployed at 12:30 p.m. at the intersection of Route 149 and Race Lane, but there was no driver, Barnstable police Patrolman Mark Delaney said.

Seventeen-year-old Jean Ikchucki of Brazil later returned to the scene of the crash with his mother, according to Delaney.

Ikchucki, who was banged up but not seriously injured, told police that his mother was driving the car at the time of the crash.

He and his mother, who does not speak English, were taken back to the Barnstable police station to speak with investigators through an interpreter.

During the interview, the police determined the young man was driving the car, Delaney said.

Ikchucki does not have permission to be in the country, so he didn’t have a valid Massachusetts license, the patrolman said.

Barnstable police Sgt. Sean Sweeney said Ikchucki concocted the story about his mother driving the Mercedes to avoid being cited in the crash.

His mother does have a Brazilian license but it’s not legitimate, Delaney added. She had allegedly paid someone in Brazil $1,500 to use her old photograph to renew her license, he said.
