MA-Weymouth: Police officer lucky to be alive

Weymouth: Police officer lucky to be alive

A Weymouth police officer is lucky to be alive today after he was able to avoid being hurt when an alleged drunk driver in a van was speeding toward his cruiser.

Police say 25-year-old David Black is an illegal immigrant from Ireland and is expected to appear in Quincy District Court Wednesday for his arraignment on charges of driving drunk, driving to endanger and driving without a license.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials have been notified as well.

Last night around 10:30 p.m. officer James Flanagan was driving on North Street when he saw the van speeding toward him in his lane at a high rate of speed.

The officer said the two vehicles missed eachother by just a few inches.

The cruiser jumped a curb and skidded about 280 feet and hit a fence.

The van skidded off the road and flipped over.
