US NEWS: Immigration Vote: End of a Presidency?

Immigration Vote: End of a Presidency?

The buzz around Washington today is that the proactive phase of the Bush presidency is over.

This analysis was prompted by the 46-to-53 Senate vote Thursday that ended the debate over immigration, most likely for the remainder of George W. Bush's term in office.

"You could make the case that the Bush presidency ended this week," a former White House adviser to Ronald Reagan told U.S. News. He points out that not only did Bush lose his main domestic priority for his second term, but he also faces a revolt within his party over his Iraq policy.

That was driven home when Sens. Richard Lugar of Indiana and George Voinovich of Ohio broke with the administration and said it's time for the United States to start disengaging from Iraq. Bush aides are trying to persuade the GOP dissidents not to stray too far and to give the president's Iraq policy longer to work. But it's unclear whether those arguments will work.

On immigration, Bush argued Thursday that the American people realize that the status quo is "unacceptable," and he expressed disappointment that his compromise measure failed. But its loss was caused at least as much by opposition from conservatives as from liberals, and it caused a rift between Bush and his base that may be irreparable. White House officials are trying to shift blame to the Democratic majority in Congress. Bush advisers say Democratic leaders will now be unable to show any progress on immigration, raising questions about whether they can govern effectively.

But Bush also will pay a price. Strategists of both parties say Bush has now moved closer to lame-duck status—especially considering that his popularity is so low, with only about 30 percent of the public approving his job performance. This means his influence on Capitol Hill has been greatly diminished.

Yes, except that he still has the power and obligation to enforce the law.

Senator Sessions encouraged him to do it so that he would "have a legacy", saying it would make him the only president in 40 years to secure the border. This soft sell really has a chance of working, especially if we apply pressure as the "BAD COP".

Its really his only move to salvage something of his personal dignity going out of office. Its really his only move to save the Republican party. Senator Sessions ain't no fool. I think he has taken measure of what drives the man, Bush. Thus we saw him treating his opponent on immigration with warmth and dignity that few others accord Bush these days.

Bush has towed the globalist line but he has failed at THAT. Now it comes down to Bush the man, and avoiding the shame of the many failures, and no victories. Securing the border and enforcing the law is his ONLY good option to avoid this personal sense of failure.

I respect the professionalism and brilliance that Senator Sessions showed during this effort. Led with facts.

About failing the globalist line....the AMERICAN people spoke loudly enough that even the MSM had to pay attention, as well as Senators. The Globalists will not give up. This is a great diversion, while they work further on their NAU, Agenda 21, harmonization, etc...plans.

Mark my words...we are entering a far more dangerous time. Chertoff, just today was acknowledging what happened in the UK, yet was perfectly satisfied with the status of the USA's security.

EXCUSE ME, CHERTOFF...OUR BORDERS ARE OPEN, UNDEFENDED, AND TERRORISTS ARE HERE.

You are on the money. Everyone on the planet knows our southern border is wide open, so a terrorist certainly wouldn't put himself to any trouble by taking a Delta to JFK. There is no possible way our government could know who is in the country. Bush used that mantra during the campaign to try to pass their ill-conceived bill: "we have to bring them out of the shadows, so we'll know who's here." We might as well just post a sign: "All terrorists report to Chertoff's office and be registered." My gosh, who do they think we are!!!

This Presidency is over. No one trusts him. No one believes him. Everyone knows he alone has flooded this nation over the past 6.5 years with at least 20 million new illegal aliens we can't sustain and sucked 20 million manufacturing jobs out of the country we desperately needed with his equally Treasonous Free Trade Policy.

The man is worse than pond scum.

And I voted for him twice before I took the time to dig in, research and find out who he really is and what he's really up to.

If there was ever a time to sing God Bless America, it is now because we are under the Siege of Traitors.

You are too kind but . . . he can't salvage what he never had.

This is a legacy frat boy who single handedly killed a baseball team and an oil company before single handedly destroying our great nation. For those Americans who voted for him out of party loyalty without doing their homework, I forgive you. I actually voted for Bill Clinton the first time around.

We all make mistakes and now that we have learned from them we will never be doomed to repeat them. Let's move on starting with Lou Dobbs suggestion and REGISTER AS INDENDENTS, roll up our sleeves and GET OUR COUNTRY'S DIGNITY AND CREDIBILITY BACK in '08.
