Maryland: Students, lawmakers face off over in-state tuition

Students, lawmakers face off over in-state tuition

    BALTIMORE -
The battle over whether illegal immigrants should receive in-state tuition at Maryland’s public universities raged Thursday, as foreign students squared off against lawmakers who say only native-born students deserve the discounted tuition.

Sen. Andrew Harris, R-Baltimore and Harford counties, wants to prohibit illegal immigrants from receiving in-state tuition status because, he said, that amounts to a state subsidy and would take away college spots for native-born residents.

“By giving in-state tuition, you are rewarding illegal behavior,â€

But Sen. Paul Pinsky, D-Prince George’s, proposed giving illegals in-state tuition if they attend Maryland high schools at least two years, plan to apply for residency status and have parents who pay taxes.

Parents who pay taxes? What kind of taxes...income tax or sales tax If it's income tax, does it have to be using their own identity or will just any old body's suffice for the purpose of in state tuition?

Laws allowing illegal immigrants access to in-state college tuition have passed in 11 states, including Nebraska and Kansas, said Kim Propeack, a lawyer for Casa of Maryland, a statewide immigrant advocacy organization

See? They can all just go to college in one of those 11 states, which will obviously be overjoyed to have them there. No sense in Maryland bending over backwards to accommodate them.

This issue really angers me. I went to an out of state college and had to pay higher tuition but I got college loans and worked to be able to afford it. Yet this kid is talking about how he can't afford out of state tuition and wants the government to help pay for his education and he shouldn't even be here!

We shouldn't even be discussing in-state tuition. No illegals should attend our colleges. I don't care how much they are expected to pay.

Lynne, if you haven't seen my posts regarding this issue in the past....it'll probably burn you up even more if you knew that all of these illegal aliens are thumbing their noses at the opportunities they DO HAVE to go to college/university in their home countries for FREE or next to nothing. All the public colleges/universities in MEXICO for example are FREE for Mexican Nationals and there's no entrance exam, in Guatemala registration for college in San Carlos Univ. costs about $15.00 USD.....the University of the Phillipines costs $7.40/credit hour and they offer scholarships, aid, low-cost housing arrangements AND waive entrance exams for Phillipine nationals with high school diplomas from abroad AND all classes are in ENGLISH (because ENGLISH is the official language of the Phillipines).

When you hear these IA students whining that we are being MEAN and denying them an opportuntity to go to college....they are LYING... they have every right and opportunity to pursue higher education in their homelands for free or for less than what it costs for AMERICAN kids to pay for college textbooks. They just want to bide their time here b/c they think an amnesty bill will pass and they'll hit the jackpot while they're wasting space in our colleges (courtesy of our taxes). The Consulates of MEXICO have not been forthcoming to these families...they don't want them to go to school in Mexico...they want them to continue to send dollars to Mexico. It's the Consulate's job to provide this information and assistance regarding the rights of Mexican nationals to access public university studies in Mexico and get the paperwork rolling regarding that pursuit. Why don't they do this? These families don't really care about the college...they want their "soon to be " 21 year olds to get amnesty and be able to then sponsor the rest of their IA family members. It's a scam...that's what this is all about.

Interesting legalatina. I did not know this. I wish I had when this was a hot story in NC. The media never brought that up, of course.

Thank you for the information. It's good information to have when we have to fight states that are trying to allow in state tuition, etc.

I've been pursuing this angle relentlessly, I phone these "reporters" that report the SOB stories and inform of them of this....most are surprised when I tell them this...and some have promised to follow-up and do a story on that. Some have been quite taken aback and seem to have changed their minds about the whole issue when they realize that the IA claims are false.

You are so right legalatina and that's not all of the scamming involved.

I personally know of at least a half dozen families where the kids were only college bound until they had gotten their hands on the money which was supposedly to pay for their education.

These kids never set foot in a classroom. Instead the money went for other things....like savings to buy property, build a home, or start a business in Mexico.

Imagine what kind of serious money a family with multiple kids can collect through such a scam and with their ability to vanish into thin air by simply changing identities or fleeing back home, what is the risk of them ever being caught?

It makes me sick and sooooo angry everytime I think about it..............
