Notary Public Cited in Case Involving Immigration Fraud
Notary cited in case involving immigration fraud
February 23, 2011 11:17 PM
By staff and wire reports
A Brownsville notary is among six individuals and businesses that Attorney General Gregg Abbott has shut down over alleged immigration fraud in the Rio Grande Valley.
Abbott on Wednesday announced that the six are accused of violating the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, the state Notary Public Act and the State Bar Act.
Maria Yolanda Solis, of Maria Solis Notary Services, 1443 E. Jefferson St., is named in one of six lawsuits filed in Hidalgo and Cameron counties that led to temporary restraining orders and injunctions.
Also named in the lawsuits are Anna Trejo; Dora Maria Resendez; Josefina Fonseca, doing business as Fonseca Services; Maria Alvarado, doing business as Mary’s Bookkeeping & Income Tax; and Emilio Zabala, doing business as Azteca Immigration.
Solis is the only notary in Cameron County named in the lawsuit. The five others provide services in Hidalgo County.
State investigators say all six are commissioned Texas notaries public but falsely claimed to be able to handle immigration cases.
The state seeks civil penalties of up to $20,000 per violation.
