Officials Uncover New Trend Among Illegal Immigrants

HIDALGO COUNTY - Authorities say more illegal immigrants are carrying copies of their Mexican voter identification cards as they venture into the United States.
Officials said the new trend seems to be growing exponentially.

A traffic stop Monday in La Joya shed some light into why the immigrants are opting to carry copies instead of the actual documents.

Luis Campos, a self-admitted illegal immigrant, said Mexican soldiers take away the documents when they are deported.

"That's the first time we encounter this," La Joya Police Chief Julian Gutierrez said.

"Copy and laminate it ... that's exactly what they did. If you're not trained, it'll get by you," Gutierrez said.

"We see what new trends they're using now. A lot of times they use fake IDs to escape," Gutierrez said.
