AL: Athens to Target Contractors Who Hire Illegal Aliens

Athens to Target Contractors Who Hire Illegal Aliens

    March 27, 2007

    From NewsChannel 19

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - Beginning today, the Athens City Council will require contractors to sign statements saying they are not employing illegal aliens on any city-related projects.

The policy change was approved at Monday's council meeting.

City council president Harold Wales said if a contractor violates the agreement, their contract would be terminated. He said the police department and public works will help enforce the resolution.

A city attorney said its unclear if the council's action would survive a legal challenge because the federal government has sole authority over immigration matters.

There should be no reason that the ordinance does not muster validity. It is written on the local level to counter violation of a federal law. It merely seeks to support and bolster enforcement of a Federal law already on the books.
Title 8,U.S.C.§1324 prohibits alien smuggling, conspiracy, aiding and
    abetting!
