Mayor expresses frustration with illegal immigration

AURORA - Aurora Mayor Ed Tauer told YOUR SHOW on Sunday that he understands the public's frustration with illegal immigration because he's experienced it as well.


He says city policy is to notify federal immigration authorities, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency (ICE), every time police come into contact with someone they suspect is not in the U.S. legally, who is in custody for a felony or serious misdemeanor.

"Most of the time, the overwhelming majority of the time, they will not come and pick them up and do not want them held," said Tauer, in response to a viewer's question. "For example, I think in the last year and a half, we've had about 30 times out of the couple thousand times we've contacted them, that they wanted the person we were able to apprehend."

Tauer said he did not support efforts to penalize those who would rent or hire illegal immigrants in Aurora. He said similar efforts around the country have been overturned in courts and the issue is likely to be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Local law enforcement is has the ability do deport the "12 million" illegal aliens but ICE doesn't. Once again, the bottle neck is resting clearly on the federal government. DHS, headed by a presidential cabinet member can't seem to get it done. This starts at the top and has not been corrected for years.

The federal government needs an immigration train. You can haul a lot of people out on our rail system.
