Obama criticizes new Georgia immigration law
ATLANTA | Tue Apr 26, 2011 7:29pm EDT
ATLANTA (Reuters) - President Barack Obama criticized on Tuesday a new immigration bill passed by Georgia's senate that would give police authority to question suspects about their immigration status
Obama also defended his administration's record on securing U.S. borders and reiterated his call for comprehensive immigration reform.
The Georgia bill is similar to one passed by Arizona last year that sparked a national debate on state attempts to crack down on illegal immigration.
Arizona's law criminalizes illegal immigration by defining it as trespass and allows local law enforcement agencies to question anyone they suspect lacks correct immigration papers.
Asked about the Georgia bill, Obama said: "It is a mistake for states to try to do this piecemeal. We can't have 50 different immigration laws around the country. Arizona tried this and a federal court already struck them down."
"The truth of the matter is that we've done more on enforcement than any previous administration. We have more border patrols. We have been engaging in serious crackdowns on employers who are hiring undocumented workers," Obama said in an interview with WSB-TV, which is based in Atlanta.
Georgia's Senate passed the bill this month but stripped out a requirement for many private employers to check the immigration status of newly hired employees on a federal database called E-Verify.
It is unclear whether Republican Governor Nathan Deal will sign the bill into law.
A U.S. appeals court this month agreed with an earlier court ruling that blocked parts of Arizona's controversial immigration law from going into effect.
That included a provision that would require police to determine the immigration status of a person they have detained and suspect is in the country illegally.
Arizona-inspired immigration measures also are proceeding through legislatures in other states including Alabama, Indiana, Oklahoma and South Carolina.
Utah has passed and the governor signed an Arizona-inspired measure which also included other provisions such as a guest worker program.

P--s off Obozo! We The People have been trying for YEARS to have at least ONE President support us, since 1986 YOU are the very worst! If YOU the Gov't ( Federal ) won't support us, at least SOME of our State Governments will.
I fully expect you will sick Holder on Georgia if Deal signs this into law. Funny how that works... if a State wants to protect their citizens you sue ( Arizona), but if another State wants to grant their own form of shamnesty well that's okay. I guarantee if you sue another State for trying to enforce FEDERAL laws, you will be sinking your political career.

Has President Obama said anything about Utah immigration laws, which includes a guest workers program and were recently enacted into law? If I am correct, Utah police officers now have a legal right to question residential status of illegal immigrants during traffic violations or any other police contacts? All States should have equal law enforcements rights. When you aid and support criminals, you live a criminal life style yourself:

I am very confused.
The questions are how it is unconstitutional or racial profiling to enforce existing laws Legislated and enacted into law by United States lawmakers. Which are laws in place meant to be enforced to prevent illegal immigration? If State Law Enforcement Officers can respond and assist with bank robbery crimes, which most are Federal crime, why are Officers prevented from enforcing laws against illegal aliens? United States immigration laws are not enforced against millions of undocumented immigrants unlawfully invading States and what are the reasons for such dangerous actions? Moreover, we Americans cannot change what has happen in the past; however, there is nothing preventing us currently from taking sensible legal steps to combat and control illegal immigration, because not any Country can be stable with millions of foreign born lawbreakers, committing fraud and criminal crime, displacing citizens jobs, overcrowding jails and prisons, due to constancy criminal activities. Protesting in streets, talking, holding up signs and expressing unethical comments, such as i.e., “we are undocumented, and are not afraid of police officers,â€When you aid and support criminals, you live a criminal life style yourself:
