MIAMI (AP) - An immigration trial will begin in Miami for a former University of South Florida student who faces deportation despite being acquitted of federal explosives charges.

Twenty-three-year-old Youssef Megahed, who will face immigration charges Monday, was arrested along with a fellow USF student in August 2007 in South Carolina. Deputies said they found dangerous explosives in the trunk, but a federal jury acquitted him of those charges in April.

Megahed, who is Egyptian, was grabbed by immigration officials a few days after his acquittal.

Deportation Hearing Underway For Fmr. USF Student
    John MacLauchlan

On Monday, deportations proceedings for Youssef Megahed got underway at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Krome Detention Center.

Megahed and another USF student, 28-year-old Ahmed Mohamed were arrested in South Carolina in August 2007 after law enforcement officers said they found 'dangerous explosives' in the trunk of their car after they were stopped for speeding. Mohamed, an engineering student, said the PVC pipes fill with a potassium nitrate mixture were homemade sugar rockets. He later pleaded guilty to providing material support to terrorists and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

Megahed maintained his innocence and in April of this year a federal jury sided with him and found him not guilty of illegal transportation of explosives and illegal possession of a destructive device.

A few days after his acquittal, Megahed was grabbed by immigration officials who want to deport him back to his native Egypt.
