PHOENIX - The driver of an SUV that overturned on I-17 north of Phoenix has been arrested and charged with human smuggling and other crimes, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said Thursday.

DPS said the driver, Geraldo Morales-Morales, 29, is a Mexican national, as are all of his seven passengers who were injured when the SUV left I-17 and rolled several times Wednesday evening. The vehicle landed upside down in the median.

The driver ran away from the crash scene. DPS said Morales-Morales was arrested about 11 p.m. Wednesday standing near a pay phone on the Carefree Highway about a mile from where the rollover happened.

In addition to human smuggling, Morales-Morales faces charges of money laundering and numerous counts of aggravated assault.

Six people riding in the SUV were ejected and seriously injured in the wreck. One person was still in the vehicle and had to be extricated.

DPS said the two most seriously injured are ages 15 and 16. They were flown to John C. Lincoln Hospital where they remained in critical condition Thursday. The rest of the injured passengers were adults.

Yet Sen. Schumer says our border is being secured. Just how much will this event cost the citizens of Arizona? How many trillions of dollars have illegal aliens cost the citizens of this country since the 1986 amnesty?---directly. And indirectly our agricultural system is slipping way down the ladder.

When I first heard of the rollover I suspected illegals, but I didn't post because no media outlets would say it involved illegals...

DPS officers arrested a suspected human smuggler who they believe rolled an SUV multiple times on Interstate 17 Wednesday afternoon, injuring seven people.

Authorities suspect Geraldo Morales-Morales, 29, was trying to assist another human smuggler in taking several undocumented immigrants to a drophouse, according to DPS officials. The accomplice fled and remained at large Thursday, the state Department of Public Safety said.

DPS received calls Wednesday at about 5:22 p.m. regarding a white SUV that had rolled over while going south on I-17 near Pioneer Road, the statement said. The SUV landed in the median.

Six of the eight passengers, all of them suspected illegal immigrants from Mexico, were ejected. One was trapped inside the vehicle, according to a DPS statement.

The two most seriously injured were a 15 and a 16-year-old and they were flown to an area hospital. As of Thursday morning, they were still in critical condition, the statement said.

The other five who were injured were adults.

None of the passengers were wearing seat belts when the vehicle rolled over. It was still unclear what caused the rollover.

Authorities said Morales ran away and that he was arrested hours later, about 11 p.m., after he was spotted by a pay phone near the Carefree Highway, one mile from where the vehicle wrecked. He was treated for minor injuries and arrested.

According to Bart Graves, a DPS spokesman, Morales told officers he was assisting another human smuggler when the rollover occurred. The other smuggler was reportedly driving with the illegal immigrants north on I-17 when the vehicle they were in broke down.

That's when he called Morales and asked him to pick up the undocumented immigrants and take them to a drophouse, Graves said.

Morales was booked on suspicion of numerous counts of aggravated assault, human smuggling and money laundering, the statement said.

One of the first things I noticed when I first started listening to the Phoenix news was how many incidents of traffic accidents involved people fleeing from the scene. It took me a while to figure out they were illegals. This is a regular event in Arizona. Then they hit a Hispanic neighborhood, which isn't difficult in Arizona, and someone will harbor them until they can get out of town or things blow over. People around here don't seem to think much of it, which is why it's so bad here.

All a sanctuary city status does is condone committing crimes. These people protect each other, they don't give a damned about sanctuary city policies or otherwise. They will not turn each other in. Sanctuary city status is not worth what little will come forth.
