Immigration Raid At Dairy
By Brian Allen
Story Updated: Oct 29, 2008 at 10:53 PM CDT
Late breaking details of a federal immigration raid Wednesday afternoon at multiple dairy operations in Veblen.
Here's what we know right now:
27 people were arrested: the result of a three month investigation involving 6 law enforcement agencies, including federal immigration and customs enforcement.
13 of the people arrested face identity theft charges tonight while the other 14 are accused of being in the country illegally.
25 minutes ago, i spoke with tim counts, a spokesman for ICE. "This investigation began about three months ago when the Highway Patrol stopped a man in August. He presented suspicious documents during a traffic stop. The patrol learned the man had been using an invalid Social Security number to register the vehicle he was driving and over the course of the three month investigation the patrol discovered a string of people either used invalid or even stolen Social Security numbers to register their vehicles."
Counts did not reveal the names of the specific dairy operations involved.
He did tell us this investigation is not over. Stay with Action News as we get to the bottom of this story.

Hearing To Determine If 14 Arrested Are Legal Citizens
The next step for 14 people arrested in northeast South Dakota is a hearing to determine if they're in the U.S. illegally.
Tim Counts with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement office says they could be deported.
Authorities arrested the 14 on Wednesday and took 13 others into custody on charges of identity theft or using false identification.
The arrests in the Veblen area were made where the 27 people worked or lived.
The investigation began three months ago when a Highway Patrol trooper was given suspicious vehicle registration documents during a traffic stop.
