BANGOR, Maine -- A man who spoke out on behalf of migrant workers for the last 30 years in Maine has acknowledged harboring illegal immigrants.

South Portland resident Benjamin J. Guiliani Sr. pleaded guilty Tuesday to five federal charges in U.S. District Court in Bangor.

The 62-year-old Texas native was indicted in January on charges including harboring and transporting illegal immigrants and failing to file a corporate tax return. The Bangor Daily News said the plea agreement lays out stipulations for paying back taxes.

Guiliani earned a reputation in the 1990s as a leading voice for the ethical treatment of immigrants as head of the Maine Migrant Workers Advocacy Group.
