Fargo legislator in favor of Arizona-type law

A Fargo legislator said on Monday he is drafting a bill to be proposed next year based on Arizona’s controversial immigration law.

Rep. Jim Kasper, a Republican from District 46, said he wants his bill to be as close to the Arizona law as possible.

That legislation, among other elements, mandates that law enforcement check the immigration status of people they stop or arrest if they have reason to believe an individual might be in the country illegally. It also establishes a state law that outlaws illegal residency.

Critics of the Arizona law say it invites racial profiling, but Kasper said it’s not a “witch hunt for illegal immigrants.â€
