NY proposal could target day laborers

MAHOPAC, N.Y. (AP) - Two New York politicians are advocating an enforcement effort that could target day laborers in the Putnam County hamlet of Mahopac (MAY'-oh-pak).

Business owners say groups of men looking for work in construction or landscaping are getting larger.

Assemblyman Greg Ball of Patterson and Carmel Town Supervisor Kenneth Schmitt want to respond with a Trespass Affidavit Program.

The program is used in Manhattan, Albany and Rochester to combat drug dealing. It gives police authority to make trespass arrests inside buildings or on front stoops.

It's not clear if the same enforcement measure could be legally applied to a public sidewalk outside a business.

Ball sparked his political career three years ago by focusing on illegal immigration issues in the village of Brewster.
