BREWSTER - State and Brewster village police conducted a joint enforcement over the weekend in the village aimed at intoxicated driving, vehicle and traffic safety, illegal parking and public drinking, resulting in one arrest of an allegedly illegal immigrant for driving while intoxicated, state police said.

The effort came after several recent drunken-driving arrests involving people allegedly in the country illegally, including a June 8 crash where a man who police say is an illegal immigrant from Guatemala struck and killed Lori Donohue, 37, and her 8-year-old daughter, Kayla, as they left the girl's Brewster dance class.

State Police Sgt. Joseph Malorgio said that police issued 37 tickets for vehicle and traffic violations, nine parking tickets, and charged three Putnam Valley teens with possessing alcohol while under the age of 21 in the enforcement. The enforcement held late Saturday through early Sunday at Route 22 and Railroad Avenue and throughout the village.

Malorgio said the enforcement, which included roving DWI patrols, was scheduled at the request of Brewster Mayor James Schoenig.

Rony Hernandez-Jordan, a 30-year-old Mount Kisco man suspected of being in the country illegally, was charged with misdemeanor driving while intoxicated, Malorgio said. He was driving an unregistered, uninsured car and had no license, all violations, police said.

The enforcements will continue throughout the summer, police and village official said.
