The latest News on 6, Tulsa World Oklahoma Poll shows Oklahomans aren't especially happy with President Bush's handling of immigration issues.

Oklahomans are overwhelmingly in favor of proposals that would tighten controls on immigration and requirements for citizenship. The latest poll shows 54-percent of our statewide sample disapproves of the way President Bush is handling immigration. 34-percent approve.

We also asked if voters favored a program that would grant established illegal immigrants citizenship if they had a job and paid back taxes. 75 percent of you said yes. 22 percent opposed the idea.

And Oklahomans favor getting tough with employers who hire illegal immigrants. 83-percent say there should be increased penalties for employers who hire illegals. Only 12 percent oppose the idea.

The current policy of sending National Guard troops to patrol the Mexican border is popular with Oklahomans. 76-percent in our poll support the idea. 18-percent oppose it.

Finally, Oklahomans are split on the idea of a guest worker program. It would permit foreign citizens to enter the country for several months to work, but not allow them to apply for citizenship. Our random sample of voters was split on this issue.

This Oklahoma Poll sampled one thousand likely voters. It has a 3 percent margin of error.
