Hispanic Group Calls for Protest Over Radio Spot

An Hispanic group is calling for picketing and the ouster of the market manager for Clear Channel Radio in Cincinnati.

The League of United Latin American Citizens is fed up with a 700 WLW radio spot it calls demeaning.

"So here are a few useful phrases. Next time you converse with an illegal alien. Tenga...be careful with those hedge clippers around the garden."

LULAC is one of the groups that pushed for the removal of WLW's "Big Juan" billboards last spring.

The ads played on stereotypes, showing a man wearing a sombrero along side a Mexican flag.

Market Manager Chuck Frederick promised then, the station would act to prevent future offensive material.

LULAC is planning a protest next Tuesday outside the WLW studios on Montgomery Road.

If the LULAC wants to silence us then they will need to police the Latin criminals the Mexican criminals and the Porto Rican criminals, and remove them from this country there selves other wise its all free Game …. 700 wont stop talking and neither will I as a mater of fact we will only get worse. We are just getting started.

If Any Criminal Alien wants to hide behind those types of groups aclu lulac ect... in this area have a rude awakening coming.
and I’m leading the pack …. The people of Greater Cincinnati have had all we are going to take of Criminals that want a free ride on our job sites in our comminutes and on our streets.

If you are a criminal Aliens in the tri state area you will be caught and dealt with according to law and if it takes a joke about your heritage to get you out and exposed, then so be it …
No city or town around here wants you or needs you the people that migrated to these communities ;eag;ey are accounted for
the rest are criminals and if they are not you will need to prove it . Other wise its jail then Home. Less the money you stole .

Sent an email to station manager:

    Sir:

LULAC is a racist group. They are given millions of tax dollars by congress, and instead of using it for LEGAL immigrants, they use it for ILLEGALS. They call anyone who is anti-illegal RACIST. If you don't believe this, sign up for their email alerts. I have!

Don't allow this group to silence your station.

    Sincerely,

    SECURE THE BORDER
    CUT OFF THE PUBLIC DOLE
    ENFORCE LAWS AGAINST HIRING ILLEGALS

    LET ATTRITION WORK!!!

I don't want to hear about demeaning....the presence of illegals in this country is highly demeaning to Americans. If things don't change, I'm afraid this will be mild compared to what could happen in this country. Reading comments in various newspapers, I see the anger level going higher and higher and getting more encompassing every week. Soon there will be no more sympathizers and the Democrats will finally see the writing on the wall, that they are on a losing horse.

Your assessment speaks for me as well. The tenor gets louder every day. It is one of the top news stories on every media. It seems like everybody hears the dissatisfaction except those in Washington. It just astounds me that Bush can be off in Canada pledging hundreds of millions to help Mexico fight their drug problem while he ignores our border where the drugs cross. It reminds me of his indifference to Katrina. He apparently has an on-off switch that he can just tune out.

Hispanics add to demands against WLW
    BY QUAN TRUONG | QTRUONG@ENQUIRER.COM
Local Hispanics demanded Wednesday that media giant Clear Channel suspend its local market manager, Chuck Fredrick, for two weeks without pay because of offensive billboards and radio spots by WLW-AM (700).

The League of United Latin American Citizens on Wednesday released a proposal to Clear Channel, listing conditions it wants met before a boycott of the station is called off.

The station agreed to a previous demand to establish an advisory board, but the league added more demands, including the Fredrick suspension and diversity training for WLW employees.

Clear Channel's WLW-AM has offended the league twice since May in incidents it called "blatant discrimination."

The first instance was "The Big Juan" billboards in May that featured a Hispanic man and a donkey. The second came in mid-August, when the station ran two different radio spots during a Cincinnati Reds game called, "Speaking to An Illegal Alien."

Fredrick said last week that the spots were old and were not supposed to air.

"700 WLW must be doing well financially for it to air just any old ad by accident," said Jason Riveiro.

Riveiro is the league's Ohio deputy director. "Frankly, no one cares that they aired by accident. Why were they produced in the first place?"

The group protested in front of WLW offices on Kenwood Road last week, demanding that Fredrick provide a comprehensive plan of what the station will do to remedy the problem.

Tom Schurr, Clear Channel's executive vice president of the eastern region, issued a statement to the league on Friday, saying the spots will not be rebroadcast and that Clear Channel will adopt a local advisory board that will work with the League to "provide station management with input on community issues and concerns."

In addition to the advisory board, the League demanded:

Two weeks suspension without pay for Fredrick

Diversity training provided by Clear Channel for all 700 of WLW's employees

A public apology during a press conference for airing and producing the spots, with a detailed explanation on how WLW will prevent such incidents in the future

That WLW play four 15-second announcements every day during Hispanic Heritage Month, from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15.

Fredrick could not be reached for comment.

LULAC can't be serious! I will never understand where they get such the audicity to DEMAND such things.

The radio station should never give in to these leeches. It's all about extorting money. First of all, who cares if they boycott. I doubt any level-headed Hispanic really cares about the ads. Most Hispanics are tuned into satellite or Spanish cable and I doubt they have much of an audience anyway.

I don't care who it is, I resent this pc garbage and "sensitivity". All these demands will do is make people resentful. Americans are known for being able to "take a joke" and laugh at themselves. People should contact the station and support them. For every boycotter, they will win 10 new fans!

They certainly don't have a problem with demeaning blacks in Mexico and yet they go off when they "perceive" they are being demeaned or sterotyped. Southerners are the butt of all the jokes but it doesn't bother them one bit. It's all amusing. But, then again, we ARE assimilated!
