An Alabama House committee has approved eight bills aimed at cracking down on illegal immigrants in Alabama.

One of the bills approved by the House Judiciary Committee would cause businesses that knowingly hire illegal immigrants to lose their business licenses. Others would make it a crime to transport illegal immigrants into the state and call for the impoundment of a vehicle if the driver can't prove he or she is a legal citizen.

The committee turned down two immigration bills. One of those would have required all workers in the state to have an identification card. Officials with the Department of Public Safety expressed concern it would cost $1.7 million to issue the cards.

A similar bill calling for identification cards cleared a Senate committee Wednesday.
