Bus carrying illegal immigrants dangles off bridge
The Associated Press

WHITE HAVEN, Pa. --More than half of the passengers who escaped after their bus teetered off the side of a bridge on Interstate 80 were in the country illegally and will be deported.

Agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained 23 of the 44 people on the bus for immigration violations, ICE spokeswoman Ernestine Fobbs said Wednesday.

The chartered bus was bound for New York City when it crashed in bad weather Monday, hit a bridge abutment and came to rest with its front wheels dangling 100 feet above the Lehigh River.

Passengers made their way to the back of the bus and got out safely before police arrived. No one was seriously hurt.

Of the 23 illegal immigrants, 22 were Chinese nationals and one was from Mexico, Fobbs said. There were 13 men and 10 women.

Police filed several traffic citations against the bus driver, Chi Yang Liu, 43, of Brooklyn, N.Y.
