Suit:New Schedule on Citizenship Termed 'Insult'

New Schedule on Citizenship Termed 'Insult'
By STAFF REPORTER OF THE SUN | April 4, 2008
The leader of a Hispanic group suing the government to force it to eliminate an extensive backlog of citizenship applications is calling a new schedule set by the embattled federal immigration agency this week an "insult" to prospective citizens waiting in line to be approved.

The group, the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund, filed a motion yesterday in federal court calling on the judge to force the agency to work faster to move through the thousands of applications filed by immigrants aiming to vote in the 2008 presidential election. Last month, the group sued the federal Citizenship and Immigration Services over the naturalization delays.

On Wednesday, after months of criticism, Citizenship and Immigration Services announced jointly with the FBI a new schedule to complete outstanding security background checks, one of the main factors delaying the processing of citizenship applications. The agencies said that by May they would have completed security checks on applications in the system for three years, and that by July those that have waited for two years would be completed.

The agencies don't anticipate finishing all of the applications filed a year ago until November. The agency was inundated with a surge of applications last July, as immigrants applied to beat a fee increase implemented that month and with the desire of voting in the election.

"It's frankly an insult to people who have done everything asked of them to become citizens," the executive director of the defense fund, Cesar Perales, said.

The group is calling for the CIS to finish all applications that have been pending for 180 days as of yesterday to be finished by September 22, in time to register to vote for the election.

A spokesman for CIS, Shawn Saucier, said in an e-mail message that he could not comment on the lawsuit, but added: "The threats to the safety of the United States are not just going to disappear. The plan put forward yesterday by USCIS and the FBI will end frustrating delays some applicants for citizenship face without jeopardizing our nation's security."

We don't have to let anyone become a citizen of this country. If it takes 5 years, 10 years, 15 etc then so be it...it's not on their time it's on our time...and if the feds can't process them all and there is a backlog then obviously there are too many applicants and it needs to be dramatically reduced because there isn't the man power to process them...so let them wait...

Yesterday I was discussing the immigration issue with two gentlemen, one whose wife was born in Germany and one whose parents were born in Mexico. They were both trying to explain to me why they do not consider our newly naturalized citizens to be American citizens. They said lining up 500 people and swearing them in as Ameican citizens does not make them citizens. They explained to me that when the wife and parents of these two gentlemen wanted to be naturalized they had to attend school at a community college for over a year.

I am glad that CIS is taking their time. The process of granting citizenship cant be rushed.

These "groups" have got to understand that there are alot of different stipulations in order to become a citizen. Its not just a matter of being here for a certain period of time or taking a test. There are background tests that need to be done on each person seeking citizenship.

Suing the government isnt going to change anything. At least I HOPE NOT.

maybe these individuals sould drag their goat smelling backside to their home country and rethink that lawsuit.

The judge should have immediatly dismissed the lawsuit and charged the Immigrants and attorny's all court costs

Why is the Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund involved? People born in Puerto Rico are U.S. citizens but since they are a commonwealth, they are not allowed to vote in presidental elections nor do they pay federal income tax--but they do collect social security.

I am just sick of their demands and law suits...if the Judge doesn't just tell them to shut the hell up he has no back bone...this also tell us they can not process 20 million people so there for no amnesty, it will over load immigration services and they will not take good enough care as to who they are letting into the U.S. That will shut them up!!

We also need to cut the amount of people we are allowing citizenship to along with visa...it to damn many people!

Whatever happened to Sovereign Immunity and the saying "you can't fight city hall."? I have been seeing some outrageous lawsuits in which governments get cowed into paying hefty settlements---sometimes on trivial issues. If you are in a protected class and get an aggressive lawyer you could hit the jackpot. Others suffer without justice all their lives.
