Pottstown police investigate a shooting in the borough Wednesday night

POTTSTOWN -- Pottstown police are looking for a man they say shot another man inside a borough residence Wednesday night.

The shooter, whose name is not being released at this time, has been identified by police to be a man they believe is in the country illegally. Police said the shooter is a Hispanic man and is believed to reside in Maryland or New Jersey.

According to police, there was a dispute inside a residence in the 500 block of Walnut Street between the shooter and the victim, Mauricio Escovar, 27, of Chestnut Street. Police said the dispute escalated when the shooter took out a handgun and shot Escovar in the side around 11:30 p.m.

Police said incident was initially reported to them as a shooting with a BB gun; however, they learned the shooter used a handgun, and reportedly fired a single shot, striking Escovar.

Escovar was transported to Reading Hospital and Medical Center for treatment of his injuries.
