    IN-STATE SEN. DELPH FILES ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION BILL

    STATE SEN. DELPH FILES ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION BILL

    US State News
    January 18, 2010
    INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA

    Indiana State Sen. Mike Delph, R-29th District, issued the following news release:

    State Sen. Mike Delph (R-Carmel) filed an illegal immigration bill aimed at verifying the citizenship of government workers and individuals who receive state unemployment benefits.

    "When working on this year's illegal immigration bill, I believed it was vital to keep the state's current fiscal constraints in mind," Delph said. "I have scaled back this year's bill from previous ones to ensure there will be no fiscal attached, however I am still committed to making Indiana a leader in illegal immigration reform."

    Senate Bill 213 requires all state agencies and local governments to use the E-Verify System to check work eligibility status of all newly hired employees and prohibit them from entering into or renewing a public contract unless the contractor and subcontractors verify they do not employ illegal immigrants.

    "As an employer of approximately 30,000 employees, I believe the state should lead by example," Delph said.

    "E-Verify is a federal system free to employers who want to confirm citizenship or legal employability. I encourage all Hoosier employers to be proactive and use this quick and easy program."

    Delph said the legislation has provisions aimed at saving tax dollars by requiring the Indiana Department of Labor to verify citizenship before determining eligibility for unemployment benefits.

    SB 213 includes several other provisions targeting illegal immigration across Indiana:

    * Requires the Indiana Department of Labor to verify the status of all adult and juvenile offenders committed to a correction facility;

    * Prohibits a governmental body in Indiana from enacting a law or policy restricting law enforcement from cooperating with federal officials on illegal immigration;

    * Increases penalties for operating a vehicle having never received a driver's license;

    * Increases penalties for counterfeiting or falsely reproducing a driver's license;

    * Increases penalties for distributing counterfeit identifications;

    * Increases penalties for terrorism offense related to identity;

    * Creates a new crime of false identity reporting;

    * Increases penalties for someone who knowingly or intentionally transports, conceals, harbors or shields from detection an illegal immigrant for commercial or private financial gain; and

    * Makes it illegal to use individual tax identification numbers or identifications issued by consulates for purposes other than provided in federal law.
