    Whiz Wit English

    Whiz Wit English
    By John H. Fund, 3/20/2008 11:18:54 AM

A small blow for sanity was struck yesterday when a local regulatory body in Philadelphia ruled that a famous cheesesteak restaurant did not violate anyone's human rights by posting a small sign: "This is America: WHEN ORDERING PLEASE SPEAK ENGLISH."

Joe Vento, owner of Geno's Steaks, says he never in fact refused service to anyone who didn't speak English and only put up the sign out of concern that so many in the neighborhood were lapsing into their native tongues when they could have used basic English.

By a 2 to 1 vote, the city's Commission on Human Relations ruled that Mr. Vento's sign did not convey any message that business will be "refused, withheld or denied." The ruling was a surprise because just last year the commission had found probable cause to charge Mr. Vento with violation of anti-discrimination laws. The same panel later decided to charge him only with posting an "offensive" sign.

The ruling comes just days after the U.S. Senate voted 54 to 44 to approve a common-sense amendment barring federal employment regulators from suing small businesses that require employees to speak English on the job.

Senator Lamar Alexander, a sponsor of the amendment, says his goal is to end "frivolous lawsuits" such as one filed by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against the Salvation Army and 125 other organizations for requiring English in the workplace except during breaks and lunch periods. Mr. Alexander's amendment would direct the EEOC to spend the money being used to finance the lawsuits to support programs to teach adults English instead.

Senator Alexander is under no illusions that his amendment will now pass the House. Last November, a previous version was approved by both House and Senate, but Speaker Nancy Pelosi cancelled a conference committee scheduled to finalize the bill under pressure from liberal groups. The legislation then died, but not before House Democrats came under withering criticism for undermining the use of English as America's common language.

This is in our paper this morning. Will congress work on this? Sixteen year old American children can't get a job because they only speak English??!!

    Franchise requirements

Recently, my 16-year-old went to the McDonald's at Wadsworth and Sheridan roads in Beach Park to get an application. She was asked if she spoke Spanish. When she replied "no," they told her that it was a requirement. Since when is it a requirement to speak Spanish to work at McDonald's in America? When I contacted McDonald's Corp., they told me that it is a franchise and they can make certain operating decisions. I can make decisions also. It is my decision not to spend my hard-earned American money at McDonald's.

just read that comment this morning Fed-up. Tell me this isn't keeping a host of people out of jobs of ALL races who are citizens of this country or legal immigrants from ALL other countries who are Bi-lingual but not in Spanish. I'm fed-up of this whole thing because it's keeping all aged people out of even the lowest paying jobs who deserve to live and work as well. English is this states "official" language and this is going too far.

I'm having the same problem, despite having a college degree and experiece in the transportation industry. Seems now, you MUST be bi-lingual with the second language being Spanish of course. It makes me enraged evertime a see a job posting that I seem to match up with until I get to the very bottom and see those dreaded words, " Bilingual (Spanish/English) required."

Apparently, the college educated supervisor or manager these companies seek must be able to communicate with the illegals he will charged with supervising.

So not only does the illegal invader take a job away from an American, they indirectly take away additional opportunites since one must be able to speak their language to work with them.

So now, an American Citizen loses out on the opportunity to even apply for a job that starts out out $50,000 a year, because companies want to ignore the law and hire cheap labor! Where's my elected representation when I need them to protect American opportunity!

    It makes my blood boil

Cant you file a lawsuit for discrimination?

So this is how employers will get around any laws that state "You must find a willing and able American to do the job first, if there isnt one, then you can hire an illegal alien". All they have to do is stipulate "bilingual" on the ad/application, and they win CHEAP LABOR.

    THIS IS JUST SOOO WRONG!

Funny you should ask Butterbean. I actually forwarded this information and the specific job listing ( there are plenty more, believe me) to an attorney with the Immigration Reform Law Institute (IRLI). The legal assistant replied back that they would pass along my information to the staff attorney.

As of yet, I have not heard anything back. I'm not sure how it is with the rest of the country, but in California, this type of job listing is common place and I believe, discriminatory. It's quite discouraging to see jobs that you are qualified for, excluding the fact I do not speak Spanish, which should not be a condition of employment unless these companies are doing business with a foreign country in which Spanish would be required (they are not).

Lou had Joe Vento on his show last night. He was very funny. He said "Hey, how can they be offended by the sign if they don't speak english?" Pretty smart guy!

I read constantly about OBL groups, lawyers for immigrants, the Mexican Consulates all coming to the aid of illegal immigrants.

Who is coming to the aid of Americans trying to survive? I see constant reverse discrimination. Yet if we speak out they try to shut us down. When are we going to have representation? Why can't we start a class action suit?

Since I keep hearing that this is a country of immigrants, what would happen if we ran to all these immigrant lawyer groups and demanded that they represent us?
