A Pawling man was sentenced Tuesday to 20 years to life in prison for brutally raping two women in the village last year.

Dutchess County Court Judge Thomas J. Dolan imposed the prison term on 25-year-old Flaviano Quintero, an undocumented immigrant from Mexico.

Quintero was prosecuted under a law that permits judges to impose life sentences on defendants who are convicted of committing two or more forcible rapes.

Quintero entered a guilty plea Aug. 6 to one count of first-degree rape for a crime he committed Nov. 8, 2007. He also pleaded guilty to one count of predatory sexual assault, admitting he had raped a second woman in her home in Pawling nine days later.

First-degree rape carries a maximum sentence of 25 years in state prison, while predatory sexual assault is punishable by up to 25 years to life in prison. Dolan imposed a 20-year sentence for the first rape and a concurrent, 20-to-life sentence for the second.

Under the terms of his plea agreement, Quintero agreed to waive his right to appeal his convictions.

The two crimes rocked the normally placid community in southeastern Dutchess County village when word about them spread last fall.

On Dec. 11, Quintero fled from his home on Coulter Avenue while he was being questioned by sheriff’s deputies about the crimes. He was apprehended 10 days later in Michigan and returned to the county jail.
